Lecturing

Celia Wolf-Devine is at ease speaking in a number of different sorts of venues, having done many lectures, workshops, panel discussions and debates. She participated in a workshop on “Mastering the Media” given at the Independent Women’s Forum in Washington D.C., is listed in their Media Directory of Women Experts, has appeared on Television, and given a number of radio interviews. She has, in addition, begun giving workshops on prayer.

Over the years, she has given lectures based on her essay “Abortion and the ‘Feminine Voice,’” at many colleges, including Yale, Smith, Boston College, Connecticut College, Brown University, and Providence College. She has found this particular talk to be one that reaches people who are wavering on the issue. Evolving out this lecture is another one entitled “Progressive, Pro-Woman, Pro-Life”which argues that working to end abortion belongs among progressive causes. She is in the process of putting together a blog with this title. Stay tuned for more information.

Recently she has begun giving talks and workshops on prayer based on The Heart Transformed: Prayer of Desire and A New Companion to Prayer; Meeting God Where You Are. She has lectured at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (to students in their Religious Studies Program), to a group of students, faculty and staff at the Center for Catholic and Dominican Studies at Providence College, and at Brown University. She gave several workshops on prayer at the Annual Diocesan Religious Education Workshop Day in March 2010, and has spoken on prayer at several local parishes. She teaches the prayer segment of the catechetical program at The Institute for the New Evangelization in Brighton, Massachusetts, and will be interviewed on Catholic Television for the Diocese of Boston in April 2013. She has previously been interviewed on television by John Primeau on “Spirit, Faith, and Family” (North American Catholic Educational Programming), and by David O’Connell. She has also been interviewed on Catholic radio stations – mainly about her work on prayer. Most recently she has been on The Son Rise Morning Show with Matt Swain and Relevant Radio with Doug Thompson (EWTN).

Having co-edited the anthology Sex and Gender: A Spectrum of Views, she is also available to talk about some of these issues. The last unit is titled “Religion: Should we call God ‘Father?’” and she would enjoy putting together a talk on that. She has given lectures and been interviewed on some of the other issues covered in that book – namely surrogate mothering, transsexualism, and Rawlsian and Feminist Critiques of the Traditional Family. The educational value of diversity and issues pertaining to affirmative action in faculty appointments are also topics she is prepared to address, either in lecture or panel discussion format. She has testified before the judiciary committee of the House of Representatives in Rhode Island, three times on same sex marriage and on informed consent to abortion.
